7 of the Coolest Places to Craft in Southeast Michigan

Do you love crafting? I do. I love creating things and learning how to work with different materials. It’s fun, calming, and makes me so happy. Plus, I usually get to decorate my home with the craft I made, and that lets me forever remember the awesome experience. There are so many unique crafts you can make nowadays. It’s not just painting pottery anymore, although that is still really fun. Now you can decorate items with fake frosting, make your own candles, throw paint at canvases, drip paint over cool figurines, burn designs into hats, and so much more. If you’re looking for your next craft and cool places to spend your birthday, keep reading! These crafting businesses are located in Michigan, but some of them have locations across the states, and even if you aren’t in Michigan, this list can still inspire you to look for these crafts in your local area. So, let’s get crafty!
#1 The 2D DIY Studio in Troy
This is every craft lover’s dream! I went here for my 25th birthday with a group of close friends, my mom, and my boyfriend. They are great because they have so much variety, and the most unique thing is probably the fake cake frosting. I went in August 2025, before their official opening in October 2025, and they have since added cute claw machine games too!
Plus, H Tea Cafe is literally right next door. They have great boba, soup dumplings, and more Asian inspired snacks and sweets. You should stop by here before or after you craft. We ate before, and then you can take your drinks next door and sip on them while you craft. They also have a cute fountain with fake flowers in it that is perfect for taking photos in front of.

Fake Cake Frosting and Unlimited Charms
Have you ever seen fake cake decor, whether it’s purses, tissue boxes, or mirrors covered in frosting, charms, and fake strawberries? This place has that fake frosting and charms. You can use them to decorate photo frames, hair brushes, pencil boxes, mirrors, phone cases, cup tops, mini clocks, hair claw clips, lamps, and more. They let you choose 2 frosting colors and show you different piping techniques. Plus, they give you unlimited charms. I decided to make a Polaroid frame holder.

Candles with Dried Flowers and Seashells
My other favorite thing they have is candle making!! You get to melt your own candle jelly and pick out all the stuff you want in it, ranging from dried flowers to seashells, pretty rocks, cinnamon sticks, and more. You can also pick out essential oils to scent the candle and colors to dye it, but I personally wouldn’t add color because it makes it a lot harder to see all the cool, pretty stuff you put in the candle. I like that the candle is clear because it almost looks like water. You get to pick what you want to put your candle in, too, like a square holder or a champagne cup. The one thing to note is that they tell you not to light the candle! Because if you did, it could be a fire hazard since the things sticking out of it and in it (like dried flowers, etc.) could catch fire and ignite nearby things in your home. They did say you could use a candle warmer, though. :)

Painting plaster dolls

And making mosaic lamps
What are all these things, you may ask?
Plaster dolls are different from ceramic pottery because you don’t need to fire them in a kiln at all, so you can take them home the same day. You won’t have to come back later and pick it up.
Tufting is basically where you use a tuft gun (think of holding something like a hot glue gun) to punch yarn through a canvas to make a design. I don’t see it currently listed on their website, but it was still going on in August 2025 and was the only craft you needed to make a reservation for, so please call ahead to confirm they still do this if you would like to try it.
The mosaic lamps involve gluing glass tiles to the glass globe of a lamp. I don’t know the details, as they are the newest craft offered, but they look very cool.
#2 Hawaiian Fluid Art in Wixom
If you want to do fluid art or resin, this is the place for you. I haven’t had the chance to go here yet, but I have made fluid art crafts, and I love products made with resin!
What is Fluid Art?
Fluid art is also called acrylic pouring or flow art. It involves pouring fluid acrylic paint onto surfaces like a canvas. At Hawaiian Fluid Art, you can pour art onto a canvas, a cute bear statue, a charcuterie serving board, or a wine glass.
I made a bear with a DIY kit my boyfriend got us for Christmas from Etsy, and I really loved it. Our bears turned out so cute. I made my pink, and I think it looks a little bit like an outer space galaxy, and he made his blue, and I think it looks like the ocean.
Resin
Resin art involves epoxy resin, which is a clear, plastic-based gel liquid. You can use molds to make things like a coaster for a cup by pouring the resin into the mold and putting fun things in it, like fake flowers and glitter. A hardener is added to the liquid, and you wait for it to set. Hawaiian fluid art offers resin tumblers, beach scenes, and mosaics. I really want to make the beach scene and tumbler. They look so pretty. I haven’t made a resin craft myself yet. I’ve bought a few resin crafts from others that I’m in love with, though, such as notebooks, trinket dishes, bookmarks, and coasters.
#3 The Paint Box in Southgate

Splatter Art
Splatter art involves flicking paint from a paintbrush onto a canvas and sometimes each other. Look out lol. :)
I did splatter art with my mom at an art studio that has unfortunately since closed, but I would love to do it again and go to the Paint Box. They provide suits to put on over your clothes and goggles so that no paint gets in your eyes if you get a little crazy splattering the paint.
Spin Art
Spin art involves placing a canvas on a spinning platform and then dropping paint onto the surface while it is spinning. The spinning force usually creates a unique and symmetrical design.
#4 Speckles + Splatter Art Studio in Dearborn
Have you ever wanted to try making your pottery on an actual pottery wheel? If so, this is the spot for you. Speckles + Splatter also offers pottery painting, splatter art, and mosaics.
#5 AR Workshop Northville
Go here if you want to craft some cute home decor like blankets, pillows, or wood signs. There are also some unique workshops I haven’t seen in other places, including hat burning and calligraphy. How cool!

#7 Creatopia in Plymouth
Located in Downtown Plymouth, Creatopia provides a ton of different pottery pieces you can choose to paint. I’ve gone her to celebrate a friend’s birthday and for a bridal shower. I’ve made a super cute mug and Christmas ornaments. Painting here is so relaxing, and you can walk to a nearby restaurant for a bite to eat before or after you paint. You can choose to paint cute figurines, mugs, plates, bowls, vases, and more!
